GUMSHOE IN THE DARK
"Diabolically entertaining" -- Publishers Weekly (starred review)
Picture
Private investigator Mortimer Angel comes across a scantily-clad girl at dusk on a lonely Nevada road during a thunderstorm. She's alone, wet, shivering, 30 miles from the nearest town of any size. Mort offers her a ride, but she pulls a gun on him and orders him out of his truck. Mort doesn't give up easily. As the girl is about to pull away, he cuts a valve stem off one of the truck's tires. When the truck stops after traveling only a hundred yards, Mort pulls his own gun on the girl, Harper Leeman. As they travel down the mountain on three tires, a strong, rough-looking guy in a black pickup appears to be hunting Harper. Thus begins one of Mort's most deadly adventures.
